Jackie Chan Says China Needs to be Controlled
In what could easily be lost in translation or misunderstood, Jackie Chan said he felt the people of China needed to be controlled.

Chan told a business forum in the southern Chinese province of Hainan that a free society may not be beneficial for China’s authoritarian mainland.
“I’m not sure if it’s good to have freedom or not,” Chan said Saturday. “I’m gradually beginning to feel that we Chinese need to be controlled. If we’re not being controlled, we’ll just do what we want.”
He went on to say that freedoms in Hong Kong and Taiwan made those societies “chaotic.”
Instead of looking at what everyone’s favorite Hong Kong star could mean, or even that a Chinese man who grew up in the area is aware of how divided, indifferent, or independent many areas of China are, Jackie Chan has received negative sentiments from every side…
I feel like this is a translation problem, where Jackie Chan meant the people of China have too many different ideas, goals, and divisions at the moment (Taiwan being a perfect example), and that some control and overview to find the best course of unity would be better than 50 clashing opinions and personal/regional desires.
What do you think?

Either way you spin it, I think its a controversial comment.
Taiwan and Hong Kong are chaotic, but how is China any different?

Truth is Chan is quite right.
That’s if you think very long and very hard about it.

I think he meant that he sees America – it’s pretty wild compared to China. Crime, drugs, etc.

I’ve heard that Jackie Chan has 2 half-brothers and half-sisters but is this true? I’ve also heard that he has only one sister and one brother. Can someone clarify with me?

China refused to trade with Britain so the Brits started importing opium into the country to destabilize China. The Chinese found out and destroyed a few ships. The British started a war. It ended with British control of Shanghai and China forced to trade with Britain.

Maybe he means too much freedom too quick is a bad thing. Every society has issues when something drastic changes.

I think the comment is very controversial to say the least..
Celebrities shouldn’t make such comments when so many people look upto them.
He may be right in short term, but there is a cost associated with Freedom but in the end its worth it. All the developed world at some point of hostory wasn’t democratic and authoritarian, but over time it developed and we are where we are.
So will be China ( it will be fine, if done gradially, but People have to learn that with Freedon comes self responsibilities)

To be honest, Chan is right! Although everybody wishes “Hong Kong and Taiwan is chaotic” would be wrong, I must admit they will develop better under some controls!

Inside all people lives dark side
It’s funny, but it’s true. And without control the side begin doing different things. From one side it can be “good” and from other can be “evil”. Who knows.

The world is not black and white, it is a kajillion shades of grey. I think people should not take what Jackie Chan said literally and instead consider if it is partly right and in what ways is it correct. Maybe in some ways the people of China need a controlling government and in some ways they do not.

I’m not sure. As my love for Jackie Chan is not beginning to fall I think that this could not be only mistranslation. Although I think that even if he meant precisely what he said – every man have right to his own opinion. Saying that he also used some sort of freedom that he is using, and that he could be devoid of. Even if most of us disagree with his opinion, every opinion (especially from a person that knows his people) should be considered as important voice in discussion. He knows Chinese better than us, and maybe there is something more in his words – something that we are unable to see.
