Jackie Chan Says China Needs to be Controlled

In what could easily be lost in translation or misunderstood, Jackie Chan said he felt the people of China needed to be controlled.

AS Jackie Chan Democracy Backlash

Chan told a business forum in the southern Chinese province of Hainan that a free society may not be beneficial for China’s authoritarian mainland.

“I’m not sure if it’s good to have freedom or not,” Chan said Saturday. “I’m gradually beginning to feel that we Chinese need to be controlled. If we’re not being controlled, we’ll just do what we want.”

He went on to say that freedoms in Hong Kong and Taiwan made those societies “chaotic.”

From Associated Press

Instead of looking at what everyone’s favorite Hong Kong star could mean, or even that a Chinese man who grew up in the area is aware of how divided, indifferent, or independent many areas of China are, Jackie Chan has received negative sentiments from every side…

I feel like this is a translation problem, where Jackie Chan meant the people of China have too many different ideas, goals, and divisions at the moment (Taiwan being a perfect example), and that some control and overview to find the best course of unity would be better than 50 clashing opinions and personal/regional desires.
