Deserts Chang – Chinese CoffeeHouse Music

I hope everyone had a great Christmas/holiday/whatever-you-celebrate.  I thought I’d be in the giving mood and share with you a personal favorite gem in my (rather futile) attempt to find Chinese music not about love:  Deserts Chang (张悬, Chang Xian)

Her music is quite different from your usual Chinese flair, both in style and in meaning (i.e., actually holds some depth and variety). It has been described as “Alternative,” and more popularly, “Coffeehouse,” since that is how she got her start.  She is currently signed on with Sony BMG and releases new songs rather regularly.

Her most popular song on Youtube

I figured this would be a good time to mention this underground artist since she is about to release a new single, aptly titled Love, New Year.

She is rather unknown – even in China.  Her music is so different from Chinese norm and US pop that it only has a cult following, so buy her albums from a site like YesAsia if you find you really like her unique style.

If anyone has other recommendations, please feel free to share. Afterall, ’tis the season!

For the record, I’m not against songs of love and devotion, and pure hearts, and two being… ugh… ok, sorry, I just threw up.

Point is, there are other things aside from love to sing about. Look at all the awesome songs the US comes up with… Kissing a girl and liking it, being Lovestoned…
Uhm… ok, bad examples…
