Betel Nut Beauty

10 October 2008 100 views 19 Comments

I never knew such a thing existed. These skimpy clothes wearing ladies sell something called betel nut. They are called Betel Nut Beauties. They sit in these glass rooms and wait for their customers to come and buy these nuts from them. At first, I thought these girls were prostitutes because this is exactly the same setting as the Korean red light district. (For reference, see the picture on this thread.)

I am not saying that this is very shocking to me. I mean many of the products I buy and use every day are marketed in very similar ways. You can turn on the TV, at any hour, and find commercials starting sexy women selling their products with the idea of sex.

What do you guys think of this? Has anyone actually bought these nuts before? From what I can tell, chewing and sucking on these nuts will cause oral cancer.

I had never heard of the nuts or the women before. The Wiki article you link to gives some interesting history and also touches upon the interesting social aspects of the marketing and the women.

No matter how hard I try to cover all the weird news from Asia, I always stumble upon something like this. I should really go and have a big holiday there. I probably wouldn’t come back :)

I have never heard of these nuts before but I am definitely intrigued with the advertising of this product. How bizarre to have a female dressed provacatively in a glass room waiting to sell nuts. I’m sure the women get paid decent money to just sit down but is it really worth it? It’s unfortunate that sex sells.

I’d que up and buy tonnes of nuts, if they all look like that…she’s one hot babe.

Yes, it is true, that sex sells, that’s why it’s the oldest preffession – not nut selling.

Yes indeed, you can sell absolutely anything with sex. And I don’t see that will change any time soon.
