A report by a British charity says there has been a sharp decline in the number of young girls to boys in some parts of India in the last five years. Anjana Pasricha reports from New Delhi, the cultural preference for sons has led to a skewed ratio of girls to boys in India as many families abort female fetuses.

This story should not be a surprise to anyone. Everyone knows that this is happening and not just in India. What is surprising is that the number of incidents do not seem to be decreasing.

The British medical journal, Lancet, has estimated that half a million female fetuses are aborted every year in India.

Some studies are showing that the number of ‘missing girls’ are increasing and it is getting harder to keep track because some parents are not even reporting the birth of a baby if it is a girl.

    1. That is so sad. I know it’s a cultural thing but it’s just so sad. Girls are great!

And yes, unfortunately it happens other places as well…

    2. Its hard to hear news like this, especially when its been going on for so long. I hope some day people will value the life of any child of any sex and things like this will stop happening.

    3. I hope so….Imagine how could they give birth without the woman…..I remember Ms. Universe of 1994 from India, Sushmita Sen telling the world about the essence of a woman …”Just being a woman is God’s gift”……The origin of a child is a mother, a woman”… ..So being a woman is a blessing!

    4. Proud of Being a woman , have u able to think world without woman ?

    5. I always thought that such things happen mostly in the Chinese community..didn’t know that female is not appreciated in India as well.

    6. we must appreciate to women who brought us to the world

    7. There should be a law preventing ultra-sounds. Very sad story.
