Philippines – Gucci Gang Controversy
This event is pretty old, but it didn’t explode until ABS-CBN Newchannel TV blew it up to mass media on March 27th. An Australian I never heard of, Brian Gorell, lost $70k to his ex-lover for a restaurant. They were supposed to make it together, but it never manifested, and Gorell has the transfer documents to back up his claim.
So he took it upon himself to reveal scandalous photos and stories of DJ Montano and his friends until he gets his money back. Here’s an excerpt from the Wikipedia article (which is locked for editing, surprisingly):
The Gucci Gang controversy is a series of events that involved an Australian blogger Brian Gorrell who published his accusation against his former boyfriend of swindling him of money totaling US$70,000.[1][2] Gorrell’s blog, which was first published on March 4, 2008, has also accused his ex’s well-to-do friends, whom he tagged as “Gucci Gang”, of attempting to cover up the deed and striking back at him.[3] The blog has since become a major gossip topic in Philippines‘ capital city Manila, exposing its high-society youths’ alleged freeloading lifestyle and addiction to cocaine.[4][5] It has also tested Philippine and Australian online libel laws, and raised questions about the extent of freedom of speech in blogging.[6][7][8]
The blog was taken down for a day and returned, but with comments disabled.
Personally, I don’t know what the big deal is, or who the people involved are. However, people have been calling it bigger than the previously-mentioned Edison Chan Sex Scandal.

Blogs have become so powerful now. Another blog was outting a cab driver for stealing his sidekick, after awhile the cab driver went to jail.

haha, I am glad you like it. I did not make up that feature, though. Vox has a Question of the Day that users submit (btw, if you register there, I can add you as a neighbor and you can see my other posts).
But I think I see potential for it on this site, it just needs to be about Asian news and not about me since this is not a personal blog. Maybe people ask my opinion about celebrities or something…
Thanks for the suggestion! I’ll think about it and run it by andy.

Haha, I do not know what the problem is. Try using a gmail account for registering, and check your spam mail.
I am not sure whether you don’t get the e-mail, or the link within the e-mail doesn’t work, but I think both problems can be solved by using gmail.
Also, if you need further help, just e-mail me with SAME-NAME-AS-HERE-at-gmail-dot-com

This case had died down.
Anyways, blog and the net is a powerful tool to gain justice and supporters.

Hi:
I have always stated that my website regards the law and is not personal which I hope it will remain, although personalities are involved whenever you state to write comments that a person’s mother would not mind reading. That said, as a minority investor in PPR and having been in discussions with the Gucci Group, everyone including this blog, may be subject to a lawsuit. I imagine that this blogger, was not solely focused on said Gucci Gang, but I hope that the blogger realizes that under international law that it is both a Trademark and Service Mark violation to use the name Gucci without permission, which I understand has not been granted, to any newspaper in regards to the infamous “Gucci Gang.” I frankly fail to understand why the Lopez lawyers did not use that as a legal argument as the Gucci partner in Makati, Philippines may now be sued for gross negligence and the store may sue every paper and Brian Gorrell for use of the name as PPR extends throughout the world, including Toronto, ON. Just wanted to advise you as I am performing due diligence on behalf of both my investors to pass on to Gucci or PPR’s General Counsel for immediate litigation. Cheers! Jason

Oh, yes, this topic is widely discussed everywhere on the net. It’s not only about money, but also about legislation and the freedom of speech. That’s why it’s such a hit. It’s a good opportunity to discuss all these topics in one. Do you think there will ever be a strict law about the contents of information on the net?
