Korean Box Office
1. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (U.K)
2. Transformers: The Movie (U.S.)
3. The Cut (South Korea)
4. Black House (South Korea)
5. The Decent (U.S.)
6. Taxi 4 (France)
7. Shrek 3 (U.S.)
8. Ocean`s Thirteen (U.S.)
9. Package Screening (South Korea)
10. Live Free or Die Hard (U.S.)
This is a sad list to me. 5 out of the top 10 movies in Korea are American films. More importantly, only 3 out of the top 10 movies are Korean films. I know Korean films do not have global appeal, but shouldn’t the ratio be other way around?

Harry Potter is an international (although undeserved IMO) phenomenon. You’ll probably find that in any country box office chart. Also, Transformers?! C’mon, every cool (or nerdy) kid loved them when they were little! Gundams can’t even compete with them!
So, I would say the ratio is even, 3 Korean 3 Western. =P

Transformers is a cool movie. Saw it with my son..I like it better than Harry Potter, but that’s probably because I didn’t expect the effects to be so amazing.

Hey,
Look. I love Korean movies, but lately they are either 1)really bad or 2) not original.
If the Korean Wave wants to make sequels like “My Wife is a gangster 2…3…4″ and painfully sappy romantic comedies they are getting what they deserve.
Nobody can out-sequel or out fx Hollywood. But they can “out-storytell” Hollywood.
Plz! Korean Wave! Come back and Out-storytell Hollywood!

I guess that’s one way to look at it.
But the reality is that this happens almost every week and not just when an international hit film goes to korea.

I saw transformers couple of days ago too. The graphics were great but the story line wasn’t very good at all.

You are right about Koreans making stupid sequels like ‘my wife is a gangster 2,3,4′, but romantic comedies will never ever go away. korean culture is so involved in romantic comedies it’s ridiculous.
