Korean movie ‘200 pounds beauty‘, starting Kim Ah Joong, just received 12 nominations at the 2007 Daejong (Grand Bell) Film Festival. That is more than the internationally famed film ‘The Host’.
Maybe I just don’t understand Korean as well as I think I do. I liked both movies but I don’t see what the deal is. Honestly, I have seen better movies.

I agree. 200 lbs was ok, but nothing spectacular. Although, it is the first movie (or any form of entertainment) that didn’t shun plastic surgery but instead embraced it. It showed the importance of it, which is a first. I think it just spoke to a lot of people in a refreshing way.
Of course, that doesn’t mean the movie did it well.
It’s funny you should say that. It showed the importance of plastic surgery? What importance is that? That women have to get it to become more beautiful and get the men and career that they want? I know many women feel like that and this movie might be sending the wrong message, again.
Overall it was a entertaining movie. But I don’t know exactly what the ‘moral’ of the story is, if there are any.

First thing andy– how could you watch a movie like 200 pounds Beauty and not get the moral of it?
The whole point of the movie talks about how insecure many women feel about their looks. Why?
The media.
Plastic surgery is the answer many people are taking up, but that doesn’t CHANGE who they are.
I might look like a blown up elephant, and then after surgery, I can look better than Jessica Alba.
But that’s not going to change the way I react to things– it’s not going to make the everything about me.
The storyline isn’t strong, but there were some pretty outstanding performance, so give the movie some credits.
Don’t get me wrong. I liked the movie.
I do agree with you that changing a person on the outside ‘usually’ do not change who they are on the inside. But you have to realize that it definitely changes how other people look at them.
If the main character didn’t get the plastic surgery, will she ever have gotten a record deal? probably not. Will she ever have gotten with the guy? Probably not.
You’re right; she’ll probably wouldn’t have gotten the record deal or the guy had she not undergo the plastic surgery. People will give a ‘nicer’ reaction to things that appeal to their eyes. I never stated that people will not treat the person any different- I said the person won’t be completely changed.
Personally, I try not to judge people by the way they look. As cliche as they sounds, I honestly believe people are worth more than how they appear.
I guess the movie could have portrayed its message in a better way– a little bit of straightforewordness doesn’t hurt anyone.

Everyone will get different meanings out of the same film because everyone is different. And let’s not forget that this movie was made to entertain.

Reality? I don’t think so. Reality I know goes like this. Girl gets plastic surgery in hopes of getting either a better career or get a better guy. But neither works out for her because there are always someone more beautiful and/or popular who takes that job or that guy.
Maybe you and I live in different reality.
That’s a pretty negative outlook on life.. You’re right, we probably both live in two very different realities.
I live in a world where shit happens. The only difference between ‘my reality’ is that I still look foreword to a brighter day. Yours however, is perhaps ruled by how good a person looks and what sort of man she has her hands wrapped around.
Not everyone are born glamorous, and only about 2% of that everyone is happy with what they’ve got. So tell me– what of those 98% who don’t have a Hollywood face and body?

What I stated wasn’t my outlook in life. Outlook in life has nothing to do with reality, imho.
I do realize that most women are not satisfied with their body. Most women do get plastic surgery hoping that somehow that’ll make them more successful in love and career. And from people I know and from the numerous news stories I read, all are telling me that it does not work. What I am afraid is that some women will watch this movie and think that plastic surgery is the answer to all their problem because the girl in the movie ended up happy and famous. I also know that many women, especially Asian, do think that way. The percentage of women who had plastic surgery is very high and increasing.

Eh.. I think my former comment was about the scene where the girl made her tearful speech onstage. Although I’d watched the movie with English subtitles (having no ability to understand the Korean language myself)-and it’s most likely the information translated isn’t 100% accurate- I think the message was pretty clear– the girl may be beautiful now, has the man of her dreams. However, she isn’t completely happy knowing that the face she sees in the mirror isn’t her own, but the result of plastic surgery.
The girl did get her happy ending, regardless of her superficial appearance. The ending admittedly, wasn’t to my taste.
It showed the plastic surgeon’s clinic overcrowded with women who wanted to be transformed. Now, why would a perfectly good movie with an almost perfect moral show a scene that goes against everything it’d played up for?
I completely understand what you are saying. We are just seeing the movie in a different light. There’s nothing wrong with that, right?

I don’t remember the part where she looks into the mirror so I can’t comment on that part.
And why did it show the crowded plastic surgery clinic? I think it’s done to make fun of all the people who get on to the plastic surgery bandwagon. Just making some jokes about a serious subject. It is a comedy afterall. One person got a successful life by changing her looks and other people are trying to do the same. Pretty funny, I think.

There are movies that entertain the viewer so much that, even though not “profound”, you gotta reward it big. I laughed so much it hurt when I watched My cousin Vinny. I didn’t have much issue with that movie winning the Oscar (though I also thought it strange).

1) I think I have the right to be ‘emotional’ (aka passionate) about a subject and be able to state my opinion freely. You have the right to your own opinions, and what you’ve said is a way, reasonable– just.
2) “Never see the negative side”? I, however, find this statement rather naive. I believe that although things do not always require a list of pros and cons, it helps make a decision on the subject. You have to be able to see the bad side of things as much as the good side.

I don’t think it’s pride. Everyone wants to have something beautiful. She gets plastic surgery and becomes ‘beautiful’ so the guy is interested. But on the other hand, most guys, do not want something un-natural.
If a girl gets surgery done for herself, that’s perfectly fine with me. however, if she had surgery done to get a guy, then I think there’s something wrong with her head.

I just finished ‘200 Pounds Beauty’ and the end made me cry simply because it was so touching! To be so overweighted like Hana, it would be very difficult to exercise it all off, not to mention alot of time! And even if she did workout for a year I doubt she’d end up with that perfect figure. So I guess to her, plastic surgery may have seemed more attractive (sorry, I can’t think of a better word) than losing weight the hard (but healthy) way =) I didn’t think she went for plastic surgery to get the guy? She sealed up the room and was about to just die in bed, but then when she heard the phone so she was probably like ‘hey, since I’m planning to starve to death anyway, why not just go for surgery?’
Lol, that sounded lame but I didn’t think she did it for the guy, more of just her desire to have a nice figure. To be able to look good wearing anything and be able to sing on stage. Having the guy finally taking interest in her maybe a bonus of course.
OK, I apologize for my long comment! But I’m really excited to share my opinion for Witch Yoo Hee as well! Since we’re on the topic, LOL, she wasn’t like the typical ‘fun, naive, happy’ girl in most Korean dramas (Goong, My Girl, Full House) and that just made me enjoy watching it more! And I know Dennis Oh isn’t that great with acting but his looks totally makes up for it! Forever supporting Han Ga In and Dennis Oh!

Hey there! I have just watched the movie and i thought it was a fun movie to watch ( i cried in the end by the way!lol). The thing is though, I dont think anyone should patronize plastic surgery no matter how insecure or unpretty they may feel. I think the only time that plastic surgery is “okay” is when you have been to an accident and your face or any other part of your body for that matter has been “ruined”. Or if your face ( or any other part) is naturally deformed. You dont need plastic surgery to make you feel beautiful, It’s all about the right attitude in life. If your overweight, then change your lifestyle. Exercise and eat healthy foods. If you think your “ugly”, try a new hairstyle, put some makeup on or change your clothing style. I mean there are so many ways to be “physically beautiful” w/out plastic surgery. The important think is that you have a good outlook in life and that you love yourself because its the only way others will love you too! Let your inner glow shine through! I just hope that after watching the movie, nobody would want to get plastic surgery to “beautify” themselves… you are so much better than that!

I know what you are trying to say but… your statements are contradicting. You first state that plastic surgery is okay as long as your body is ruined or deformed. Then you state that people shouldn’t have plastic surgery just to make them look physically beautiful. But if you really think about it, people with deformed faces are only getting plastic surgery to become physically beautiful.

i watched this movie on the plane yesterday and absolutely loved it! It was fun to watch and also very touching in the end. I’m not sure of the morales in this story but I must agree that this film has been extremely successful in entertaining its audience.
I was also very impressed with kim ah jung’s voice…it was so powerful! I thought the songs were sung by someone else but when i heard the soundtrack i thought that kim actually sang better than the artists who recorded the soundtrack! (just my personal opinion)

I enjoyed the movie. So goes for reading the many comments posted here. It has been fun reading each posts – especially Andy & Athener’s views and initial debates . As for me, this movie was entertaining as the characters themselves look lovely, alright story line. I had my fair share of “sad” and “humourous” moments. But then again, i was quite startled tht in d end, the story sort of “glorify” plastic surgery. Esp when (if i remember correctly)the surgeon made a comment “i have God’s hand” (or smtg to that effect). Just didnt seem right to me. But living in the present time n place, i m fully aware of the growing concern of ppl in wanting to look good. I wouldnt deny the importance of looking presentable. However, i would personally think, plastic surgery and looks aside, it’s the heart that really counts. As the saying puts it “Beauty is only skin deep”. Anyway, it’s jz a story. And most stories end on a happy note anyway.

There were couple of scenes in this movie that I would have changed, if I was the director. But I do say that about every movie I watch.
I know it’s only a story but I think it’s important to figure out the moral of the story. If I don’t learn anything from a movie, I’m just wasting my time. And I don’t like wasting time.

But many at times, to make a storyline more interesting, directors tend to spice up the script a little. Adding exaggeration here n there. (this evn applies to real life stories. Exp : Pearl Harbour/ The Pursuit of HappYness) Therefore, we can’t fully apply evrything to our lives. As for this story, i would think the important thing to learn is to accept ppl for who they are. Different ppl are talented and blessed in different ways. Some in terms of looks, others are bestowed with a good voice.. etc. Sometimes our weaknesses could use a bit of help from someone elses’ strength n together, both can suceed. Just like in the story, Sang June told Ami tht she’s gorgeous but doesnt have a nice voice, Han-Na however loses in appearance but is blessed with angelic n beautiful voice. He said to Ami “She(Han-Na) was born for u”. Though I don’t quite agree with that, but the gist of it is tht in this world, we need one another.

Hi! There are really a lot of good comments here… well, i really enjoyed the movie (super). About the message of the story, it’s not really about the plastic surgery. In my opinion, it was a symbol for change. We have to think outside the box. She thought that to be happy and successful (in life and love), she should become beautiful by changing(-plastic surgery). But she ended up changing too much of herself and forgetting why she even changed. She changed for love and happiness, but she only gained success in her singing career. She didn’t become happy, and lost her most important treasures. Sang-jun have a mistake for making her feel bad of herself, but i reality we must be strong and confident of ourself. My point is… the story is not about the importance of plastic surgery, but the importance of confidence and how to have a proper change in how we see life. I hope you can all respect my opinion. however… i really love her song maria and beautiful girl hehe…

I’ve watched the movie recently and it’s OK compare to other Korean movie out there.. reminds me the movie from Malaysia starring Yusri KRU and his ex-wife Erra Fazirra.. the same “Fat movie comedy” but different storyline.
Anyway, have anyone watch the Korean movie “My Wife Is A Gangster”? this is my personal favorite.

There are many other ‘ugly duckling’ movies out there. I think this movie became a hit mostly because of kim ah joong.
My wife is a gangster is a great movie. It just got terrible with the second and the third movie.

The movie is really great. It’s fun and interesting.
There’s a moral lesson of the story. And shows the reality. It’s really hard to achieve what you want and Kim, for her to find happiness, she chose the path in which she thinks the best way for her to achieve her dreams.
Everyone of us has our own perspective in life. We live what we want to but cannot because of other aspects. Just like in the story, it showed that Kim wants to be a true singer and be recognize especially by her love but thinks of it as impossible because of her physical features. She has a good voice but in reality, it’s not just what we want a singer could only have, She must have what it takes to be a successful singer.
Yes, because of what she got through the surgery, she forgot the other that’s more important to her…although she’s still a good person (as what she did like helping the delivery man) but because she’s afraid to lose what she hoped to have for a long time, she tried to keep what she really is and truly is, and acts differently for her not to be found out that she is Hanna. (she even pushed her father and throw her cute puppy just when someone’s looking at her.) but surely she would not do it if no one is around coz she’s still a loving person…just afraid of something.
People nowadays judge by the looks of others. Coz it’s also what we first see.
And besides we can’t tell what are in the minds of others. And we just have a wrong thinking of what he truly thinks and we just got into acting carelessly and recklessly without thinking twice or many times.
The movie made me cry and i even wanted to watch it again and again.
I would never regret spending my time in watching the movie, again and again. I love it.Especially Kim Ah joong. The Best!!!

In the movie, She also works hard. She exercises and avoid eating foods with fats and etc…
She showed discipline and then the result is a beauty.

hey,,, i am tibetan. i dont usually watch movie coz i dont have all these kind of habits. but then i saw the dvd of this movie with my frd and u know, i was totally drawn by herbeauty. she is great and my god,,,, very beautifull… i have never seen like her in my entire life…. her acting,, p-lz no words at all,,, i just love to watch her face again again,,, thanks a lot for everyone involved in making this movie for casting this angel… nn ya,, i enjoyed the movie too…. love you dear kim ahh joong..

Yes, I agree, teh movie did a beautiful job showing how society’s people will react differently to beautiful people and “ugly” or “fat” people, and it really satisfied me in that regard although I felt it was badly supported if they were trying to have the audience sympathize and “believe” that inner beauty is more important if the story still ends with the main character looking beautiful, thin and perfect while getting her guy. But I guess that’s movies for you right??
She really have the best voice out there. Just makes me smile to hear her.

hmm someone said the importance of plastic surgey? why is it important? because it’s important to worry about what other people think of your looks?
It’s a simple fact of nature that people like stronger genes. Beauty is considered strong, regardless what you are on the inside. You can be the nicest person, but if you lack strength in one or more physical traits then nature tells others of your kind to overlook you. It’s not that people don’t respect fat or ugly people. It’s jut a matter of natural evolution (not to dis any christian or other believers). Punch Mother Nature in the uvula for such unfairness. But then again, so goes the saying “only the strong survive” which is very well true.

this thread seems to be quiet, but ill post my two cents anyways.
people have commented that people should be content with who they are and not alter their natural looks, even if they are fat or do not have an attractive facial structure. this is a reasonable opinion… and one that we all know is in reality as hollow as the saying, “Money isn’t everything.” Yes, it is not, but I guarantee you that 100 out of 100 people would take $1000 if you offered it to them for free.
And now, a relevant quote from the TV show, House MD:
House: “Would that upset you, really, to think that you were hired because of some genetic gift of beauty, not some genetic gift of intelligence?”
Cameron: “I worked very hard to get where I am.”

Here’s the thing. If you want to stop people from having elective plastic surgery, what about bariatric surgery (gastric bypass)? What about breast implants? Botox injections? Braces to straighten teeth? Colored contact lenses? Growth Hormone to make models grow taller?
My belabored point is, there is no easy line to be drawn between “necessary” and “aesthetic” manipulation of the human body. What about that make-up you put on in the morning? Hair extensions? teeth whiteners? hair bleach or waxing to remove hair?
Last point (I promise to stop talking soon) – if someone had these surgeries in real life, I think they would take longer than a year to recover from such trauma to their body. If she had over half her body weight and mass removed and so much of her muscle, skin, and bone sculpted and re-stitched together, it would (a) give her so much pain she’d be amped on painkillers for months, and (b) take forEVER to heal all the scars.
