A movie based on Shanghai Baby: A Novel
I don’t want to give the ending away so I will stop right there. To tell you the truth, I haven’t read the book yet so I don’t know how it ends. The novel Shanghai Baby written by Wei Hui, has bee banned in China. And I also read a review on some website(sorry I don’t remember which site it was) which mentioned about the Chinese government burning 40,000 copies of this book. Was it banned because of the sexual content? I don’t know but it wouldn’t be the first time.
If you are thinking about watching this film, think again. Almost every review of the novel and the upcoming film are terrible. If you want to watch Bai Ling get naked I guess you can go see the film. But honestly, haven’t we seen her naked too many times already? Plus according to the official movie website, shanghai-baby.com, the cast includes Madonna. Yes the famous, wanna be actress, singer. And when was the last time she was in a well made movie? Could this be it? I highly doubt it.

I had read the novel before I watched the film (trailer). Even if it has got lots of terrible review the book is much better than the film. The film has nothing but naked body of Bai Ling and porn. Yes, we all know that wearing nothing is Bailing’s personal signature.
She is absolutely not the Shanghai baby in the writing of Wei Hui (the author) but herself. Coco in the novel is some sort of new generation Chinese woman, well educated, with decent job and pursuit western life style. Bai Ling in the film is nothing but a hooker. And the body of a 40 something years old is not attractive.
Mark in the movie looks even more than a loser, intolerable.

Madonna (the singer) is not in this movie. There is a *character* called Madonna, played by actress Seiko Matsuda.

I have heard about that too but since I don’t watch lost, I can’t be for sure.
